AZ Opera Presents La bohème

09/15/2009

By Chris Wakely, SRHS Music Department Chair

Salt River High School students recently had the opportunity to see the Arizona Opera School tour performance of Giacomo Puccini’s La bohème. The opera was adapted from the original for high school students in Arizona. The condensed 50 minute production, sung in English with English dialogue, was set in a college town in Arizona, where a passionate student falls in love with a beautiful woman with one fatal flaw- she's a smoker. With some of the most beautiful music ever written this opera musically connected with students and introduced them to the dangers of smoking and the power of compassion. Members of the tour performed the memorable characters of Mimì, Rodolfo, Musetta and Marcello. Our students clapped and laughed in all the right places and let us know they were listening seriously.

Next year the Arizona Opera has commissioned a new work based on Navajo author Evangeline Parson Yazzie's children's book about the Long Walk, "Dzani Yazhi Naazbaa'/Little Woman Warrior Who Came Home." We are very excited to see this production next season.
