Salt River Elementary Student Participant in the
Capitol Tree Ornament Decorationing
10/02/2009
October 1, 2009
Arizona was chosen as the state to send a tree, known as the People’s Tree or the Capitol Tree to Washington, D.C. Arizona will be sending an 85-foot blue spruce from the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests. This tree will be placed in front our Nation’s capital. Many Arizona organizations were asked to make Arizona-themed ornaments to be hung on the People’s Tree and on smaller trees inside Washington’s federal buildings.
At Salt River Elementary school, Mrs. Burstyn-Meyers’ gave all of her kindergarteners the opportunity to make an outdoor ornament for the People’s tree and an indoor ornament for the federal buildings. The 21st Century After-School program was also involved in this activity. The students in Mrs. Killian and Mrs. Gonzales Arts & Crafts class painted gourd doll ornaments to go on the tree, too! This is an exciting experience for the SRES students as they get the chance to showcase their art in Washington D.C.
Every Arizona student who participated in this event, along with a parent consent form, is then entered into a drawing from which one student will be chosen. The student winner, the teacher, and the parents will be flown to D.C. (all expenses will be paid for). The winner will have the honor to light the tree!
Mrs. Burstyn-Meyers, Mrs. Killian, and Mrs. Gonzales students’ will have a life-long memory of knowing that their ornaments will be placed on a Christmas tree at the Nation’s capital. They will know that President Barack Obama will look at and admire their ornaments.

Hi Dawn,
Got you the pictures. When I saw the tree I thought to myself , This is going to take all day. As soon as I walked up closer, low and behold it was right in front of me. I hope you and the kids like the pictures. Im still trying to find out about the ornaments. Let me know what you think of the pictures when you get a chance. I'll have to send you three e-mails to get all the pictures to you
"Dave, Our gourd was located on the Capitol tree in D. C. Here are some pictures from Mr. Charles Jackson photographer for the Native Am. Museum. It took one phone call from me and a man’s perseverance. Cool huh?"
