The FACE Program at SRES recently held an essay contest with the theme, “What FACE Means to Me”. Homebased and Centerbased participants were encouraged to write essays and eight were submitted. A panel of judges read and selected three winners. We are proud to present our winners for the SRES FACE Program Essay Contest:

Winners will attend the FACE National Conference in March 2008. All submitted essays are entered in the FACE National Essay contest, and will be published in a collection of all FACE essays. Thanks to all who assisted with the essay writing, editing, and judging.
What is FACE?
Family and Child Education
Located at Salt River Elementary, we are a family literacy program.
We emphasize the importance of parents as a child’s first teacher.
Native Americans are eligible for the free program.
We serve families with children prental-5 years old.
Homebased-Home Visits
Services families from prenatal to age 3 at home
Receive information on your child’s development
Lessons incorporate parent and child activities
Meet other parents monthly
Children receive a book per month from the Imagination Library
Centerbased-Early Childhood Education
For children ages 3 to 5, must attend school with parent/caregiver
Active Learning
Dialogic Reading-gains in language development and vocabulary
One hour of Parent And Child Together time (PACT)
Field Trips
Promotes the Pima-Maricopa language and culture
Centerbased-Adult Education
For adult participants of homebase and centerbase
Adult Basic Education/GED

Mission
The mission of Salt River Elementary School is to provide our students with a dynamic learning environment where all individuals can successfully master academic, technological, bilingual, and cultural appropriate standards. All children will develop and demonstrate adequate knowledge of the O’Odham /Piipaash culture and language to enhance community awareness, establish a positive cultural identity, and increase self esteem.
