The Salt River Elementary School’s Culture/Language Program provides instruction and guidance by using the O’odham language. The program will also emphasize the ancestral and current history of the Akimel O’odham (River People), which will increase the students’ and the classroom teachers’ knowledge of our community’s cultural heritage.
Each week, the culture staff provides instruction for the students and classroom teachers and instructional assistants in the kindergarten through the sixth grade classes, while our O’odham consultant works with the F.A.C.E children (ages 3-5 years) and their parents.
Our staff designs, develops, and produces a variety of visual aids and age- appropriate teaching materials for their cultural instruction; which the classroom teachers and students are able to utilize during each lesson. Classroom teachers are encouraged to integrate the language throughout their instructional day.
Program Objectives
To recognize the importance of language acquisition and proficiency as the foundation for all areas of learning.
To provide a learning environment to foster the restoration of the O’odham Language.
To promote and integrate the oral and written native language within the classroom environment.
To increase the students’ self-esteem and self-image of their cultural identity.
