Salt River High School is unique in that it is located on a federally recognized Native American Reservation. This makes it possible to have the opportunity for our students to learn and partake in the rich histories of both the O'Odham (Pima) and the Piipaash (Maricopa) people who reside with in the boundaries of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community. Students are encouraged to be aware of the culture and ancestry of the O'Odham-Piipaash.
Elders from the local community are invited to share their knowledge of the customs and culture of the people, so future members of the O'Odham-Piipaash will have the blessing and knowledge of their ancestry. From basket weavers to storytellers, they are all invited as special guest to the school for presentations, where students are able to attend and interact with elders and artisans.
The history and values of the Community are integrated into classroom learning. Students have many opportunities to learn from the past and to be enriched by contemporary Native American experiences. For example, Salt River student representatives participate yearly in the Gathering of Nations. They are also encouraged to share their culture by participating as ambassadors of education as school Royalty in local, regional, and national events.
