The recent school shooting in Parkland, Fla. has many people wondering what to do in an active shooter situation.

The "Avoid | Deny | Defend" program was developed by the Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training program (ALERRT) at Texas State University and is meant to prepare civilians to take immediate action to save their own lives in the case of an active shooter situation.

The program trains participants in strategies than can be used depending on the severity of the situation. According to the ALERRT web site, “avoid” means to pay attention to one’s surroundings and have an exit plan in public places, among other strategies.

“Deny” means to erect barriers and maintain silence to put distance between people and an attacker, the web site advises.

Defensive actions are recommended when the previous strategies cannot be used and survival is paramount, according to the web site.

Training also included what to do when law enforcement arrives.
