Dear Salt River Schools Stakeholders,
The Salt River Schools Education Board is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Melody Herne as the new Superintendent/Director of Education.
Dr. Herne has a well-established career in education. In her 28 years as an educator, Dr. Herne has served children and families directly at the school level as a teacher, administrative team leader, assistant principal, principal, curriculum leader, and math specialist. She was also a research statistical analyst with the Arizona Department of Education Accountability Unit and was part of the team that created the current Arizona A-F School Letter Grade system.

Dr. Herne brought her expertise in data and assessment to the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community’s Education Division in February 2018, when she was hired as the Education Data Specialist. Dr. Herne has been in the Acting Superintendent role since August 2022. Her knowledge of instruction, teaching, learning, child development, and leadership—coupled with her passion for education and seeing young people succeed—make Dr. Herne the ideal person for Superintendent/Director of Education.
“As we move forward with our newly appointed Superintendent/Director of Education, we the Education Board feel confident that Dr. Herne will help our schools and organization meet and succeed the goals and expectations set by the board and the Community we serve,” said Education Board Chair Henry Osif. “I would encourage all our stakeholders to give it your all and continue supporting our students as they reach for the stars.”
Please join the Education Board in welcoming Dr. Herne to her new role as Superintendent/Director of Education.
Thank you,
Salt River Schools Education Board
